What is Loom?

Loom is an online screen recording tool. It allows you to record your screen and to record video simultaneously.

Loom is free and the recording can be easily shared via URL.

Why a Loom recording?

We use Loom (camera-off is fine*) as part of our interview process to give our candidates time to prepare clear answers and save everyone a call on our calendars. Sanctuary Computer and XXIX are remote companies, so we value async communication and expect excellent communication skills from our colleagues!

To better detail our preference for Loom →

  1. We often observe that written communications can sometimes feel a little cold & don't always give us a clear idea of someone’s affect / candor (essential for great working relationships).
  2. On the other hand, synchronous intro calls don’t always allow the candidate to detail their best answers “on-the-spot,” which is not ideal for deliberate thinkers.
  3. Loom enables screen sharing and automatically creates transcriptions, which helps different types of learners absorb information in their preferred mode.
  4. Many of our teams have normalized using Loom videos for everything from dev code reviews to design walk-throughs for clients. We view it as a basic competency in a modern studio.
  5. While we have an office space in NYC, we don’t feel it’s fair that only New York based candidates might get to meet in-person. Using Loom allows us to normalize the format and to level the playing field for all types of people, living anywhere.
